Formal education is important in any career, but it is second to lifetime exposure to an industry. Listening to decades of my parents’ discussions, who have been in the mortgage industry for over 25 years, provided a foundation that typically requires years to obtain. Many might say that my early success in the business came naturally but it is impossible to articulate how much that exposure prepared me for my position as a residential mortgage loan officer.

I found that the concentration and focus required for my hobby of horseback riding are similar to my role as a loan officer. Being responsible for the management of an animal that must have complete trust in the rider combined with the rider’s ability to anticipate changes that influence performance parallels the role of a competent loan officer.
